“Yoni” is an ancient Indian word used for the female genitalia that means “sacred space.”
Yoni Eggs are polished stones (usually made of quartz or jade) that are meant to be inserted into the vagina for a number of purposes. They are touted as a tool for kegel exercises, and a way to maintain vaginal health and improve intimacy.
The purported benefits include: increased libido, increased natural lubrication, increased sensitivity, after birth recovery (whatever that means), increased control of vaginal floor muscles, reduction of PMS symptoms and menstrual cramps, reduction of duration of menses, and improved overall health and well-being.
It probably isn’t shocking that a magic vagina stone is a myth, but let’s talk about why.
How ACOG (American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists) explains how to do Kegels.
1.) While Kegel exercises are well studied and proven to improve the strength of the pelvic floor, the insertion of a stone into the vagina does not allow for the appropriate execution of kegels. Kegels require that you contract, hold, then relax in repetition. If you are holding a stone weight in your vagina, you are forced into perpetual contraction, an act that is actually associated with chronic pelvic pain and pelvic floor dysfunction.
2.) These stones are not perfectly round, they actually have various levels of porosity which can promote bacterial growth and make them difficult to clean. Remember, TSS (toxic shock syndrome) is associated with prolonged insertion of a porous or absorbent foreign body in the vagina. Since some websites recommend overnight use of yoni eggs, TSS could be a risk.
3.) Finally, there is no stone or menstrual product that can shorten the duration of your menstrual cycle as this is determined by all of the hormone fluctuations that occurred over the last month or since the last menstrual period.
