After researching several of the top brands in organic tampons, I’ve reached the following conclusions.
Are organic cotton tampons healthier? Not exactly. There is no evidence that shows any difference in toxic shock syndrome, other vaginal infections, or menstrual cramps.
Do they work just as well as the originals? No, they likely do not. The synthetic rayon in original tampons (like tampax and O.B., at the bottom of the comparison table) actually absorbs better than cotton. Some of the manufacturers even state that you can expect to change organic tampons more often.
Are they better for the environment? Possibly so. With the use of organic cotton, there is avoidance of harmful pesticides and chemicals that can negatively affect soil and animals. If your desire is sustainability, you may be better served using the @flex menstrual disc or their menstrual cup.
Is there one brand that’s superior? It depends on what you’re looking for. If social advocacy is important to you, @corawomen stands out above the rest. If you wish to support a black owned business, look to @thehoneypotco . If you want incredible variety and transparency, look to @lola .
Are organic tampons better for you? Yes, if you enjoy knowing that your tampons are free of the unnecessary and contain only organic material. And an even bigger YES, if you like your menstrual products with a side of social advocacy and global service.
